TYPES OF ROOFS
COMPOSITION SHINGLES
Asphalt roof shingles are the most popular roofing material used on homes across North America for a good reason. They are designed to protect a home throughout decades of weathering with minimal upkeep and are available in hundreds of colors and styles.
In addition to offering a variety of style choices, asphalt shingles are also widely available throughout the U.S. and Canada. They are easy to install, making them attractive for professional roofing contractors.
TILE
Roof tiles are designed mainly to keep out rain, and are traditionally made from locally available materials such as terracotta or slate. Modern materials such as concrete, metal, and plastic are also used and some clay tiles have a waterproof glaze.
METAL
Metal roofs can last up to 100 years, with installers providing 50-year warranties. Because of their longevity, most metal roofs are less expensive than asphalt shingles in the long term. Metal roofing can consist of a high percentage of recycled material and is 100% recyclable. It does not get as hot as asphalt, a common roofing material, and it reflects heat away from the building underneath in summertime. On a larger scale, its use reduces the heat island effect of cities when compared to asphalt. Coupled with their better insulating abilities, metal roofs can offer not only a 40% reduction in energy costs in the summer but also up to a 15% reduction in energy costs in the winter.
ROLLED FLAT ROOFS AND TPO
Thermoplastic polyolefin, or TPO, is a type of single-layer roofing material that reflects heat and is energy efficient. In layman's terms, TPO roofing belongs to the broader category of “rubber roofing” materials. It contains a mixture of rubbers and other elements (fillers) that increase its durability and flexibility. TPO roofs (for commercial and residential roofing) are growing rapidly, especially in Florida.
TPO roofing was introduced in the 1990s as an economical alternative to PVC roofing. Over the last several decades, TPO has become popular due to its superior performance as a flat roof system. Primarily, TPO is touted as a more energy-efficient alternative to EPDM and PVC. And as demand for more energy-efficient roofing increases, so does the popularity of TPO.
Rolled roofing is a mineral-surfaced roofing material that comes in rolls. It is thinner, less durable, and cheaper than asphalt shingles. While rolled roofing is cheap and easy to install, its resale value is perilously low when it is used for roof-occupied structures. Rolled roofing is best installed on unoccupied structures, such as sheds, shops, garages, and other outbuildings.
